Opera Mobile 10 beta 2

Opera Mobile 10 beta 2 has received yet another update, pushing it ever closer to being the final version. Other improvements available in this update includes support for Arabic and Hebrew websites, a faster loading experience as well as increased auto-rotation support. For those who are running on Symbian 60v3, S60v5 and Windows Mobile Phones, there will be a paltry single enhancement, which is native keyboard input integration that enables one to use their default keyboard to input characters. Anyone given it a go already, and what do you think of it? Opera Mobile 10 has huge improvements over version 9. Not only does it start up about 80% faster, but it features better performance, a new interface, and a lot of little features that makes your web browsing experience better. Here is a list of some tips that will help you get the most out of Opera Mobile 10 (which of course can be download for free from Opera’s website)

Nexus One price revealed, Google press gathering on January 5th

The Nexus One mystery is finally drawing to a close. Practically all the relevant specs (including price) are out and Google will be holding a press conference on January 5th, where the Google Phone should be officially unveiled.

We've already seen the full specs of the Nexus One and while we knew that it's headed for the T-Mobile network one way or another, we didn't know any details about its pricing.

The Nexus One will be sold directly by Google online and will cost 530 US dollars unlocked (370 euro). Signing a 2-year contract (79.99 dollars a month) with T-mobile gives you a subsidized price of 180 dollars. You don't have any other plan options either, you have to switch to that specific one.

Google Nexus One Google Nexus One
The Nexus One landing page

Spy Gadgets & SecurityApparently, if you get the Nexus One on a plan, you can cancel the plan before the 120 days mark and either return the phone or pay the difference. In this case however you will also have to pay 350 dollars for the handset rather than 180.

Also you can purchase a maximum of 5 Nexus One phones per Google account. Google makes sure you understand the division of labor - Google and HTC handle support and troubleshooting for the device and exchanges, while T-Mobile will handle network-related support like coverage, billing and so on.

So there you have it ladies and gentlemen, now the only question that remains is when. But since Google has scheduled a press gathering for the 5th of January the answer seems obvious.
Google Nexus One Google Nexus One
Mark down January 5th on your callendars

Cellular PhonesOne rumor is that the Nexus One will be available in early January and the T-Mobile subsidies will start around March. But looking at that order page, it seems like the phone will be available unlocked and from T-Mobile simultaneously.

The Nexus One, the Google Phone is closer to reality than it's ever been. All that's left is to sober up by January 5th and keep an eye on www.google.com/phone. This is (or rather will be) the page from which you can get your Nexus One.

The GSM encryption algorithm was broken

Put your tinfoil hats on - GSM encryption has been broken. This means that Evil Doers can listen in on your calls and read your SMS messages. Law enforcement agencies already have that capability, so this doesn't change things if Big Brother eavesdropping is what worries you.

The encryption algorithm used in the GSM network is called A5/1 and was developed in the distant year of 1987. There is a new standard called A5/3, which is much more secure, though not used by most carriers yet.

The published materials are not actually a complete wire-tapping tool - releasing that would be illegal. But it's a step away from becoming one. For about $30,000 you can buy hardware that would allow you to listen in on a call in real time. If real-time eavesdropping is not required, the price falls down to a few thousand dollars.

Of course, any sort of wire-tapping is illegal in most countries, as the GSMA was quick to point out, but that's like saying you can't buy a car that can go over 50 kilometers per hour because that would break the speed limit.

Still, wire-tapping hasn't been demonstrated (the researches don't want to go to jail and what not), so it's not clear how easy it would be to actually pull off in practice. The researchers claim that their main motivation is to push carriers to update to the new encryption algorithm and they just might - if they get enough bad publicity.
And before you actually put on a tinfoil hat and stop using your mobile phones keep two things in mind: 1) no one will pay 30 grand to listen to you talk to your mom and 2) phone scams are a much bigger security threat than breaking the GSM encryption.

Series 40 is getting touchscreens, dual-SIMs and QWERTY keyboards

Yahoo messenger on mobile
Nokia has big plans for all three of its platforms. Despite the huge growth of affordable smartphones, the S40 platform will go on, getting touchscreens, dual-SIM and QWERTY keyboards, while Symbian and Maemo will get new interfaces with improved speed and multi-touch.
Nokia sees Maemo taking up a big portion of the number of devices sold by 2011, compared to the current niche status of the platform. When Maemo 6 hits it will bring along multi-touch support as well. Both Maemo and Symbian will get new interfaces in 2010 - Symbian^1 should be out in the first half of 2010 and Symbian^2 by the end of 2010.
As for Series 40, there have been attempts to make an S40 handset with a QWERTY keyboard but that didn't catch on. Touchscreens and dual-SIM phones is breaking new ground for Series 40.
These new and improved S40 devices will begin appearing in 2010 along with the new Symbian and Maemo devices. Nokia maintains that Symbian is their smartphone platform of choice, keeping Maemo to high-end "mobile computers". S40 is here to stay as well according to Nokia's strategy - multiple platforms to cover all the market segments for mobile phones, instead of stretching one platform from the low end to the high end.

A new interface for Symbian sounds great (the S60 5th edition specifically needs a lot of attention), but for S40 they say in 2010 they will "bring touch interaction on top of Series 40's recently renewed user interface". That sounds a lot like what the touch-enabled Symbian was at first (and arguably still is) - a non-touch UI with touch capabilities added.
That may be an oxymoron, but S60 was designed to be operated with a keypad, so merely adding touch capabilities resulted in a subpar touchscreen experience, which attracted a lot of criticism.

Logic Wireless Logic Bolt packs a projector, two SIMs and a TV

YouTube Without Buffering
Both Samsung and LG are testing the waters for a mobile phone with a projector but there's a third underdog competitor - Logic Wireless and their Logic Bolt, which recently got updated with slightly improved specs.
The Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1.5 offers quad-band GSM support with not one but two SIM cards. It has a 2.6" QVGA screen, which might or might not be a touchscreen - the Logic Wireless website is very stingy and ambiguous when it comes to information.
For example, the "TV & FM Radio" section of the features page says "Watch TV and play FM Radio". This video presentation is a bit more affirming, claiming both a touchscreen and Analog TV:

Video

We know what you're thinking - dual SIM and Analog TV and those looks equate the likes of the exquisite NOKLA brand. Strangely enough, Logic Wireless is actually a small 19-member team based in Arizona.
Anyway, the Logic Bolt has a built-in projector (unlike LG GW820 eXpo, where the projector is an addon). The projector has a VGA resolution and the projected image is between 34" and 64" in diagonal from a 1-2m distance. The 1200mAh battery is good for 2 hours (info from the site) or 1.5 hours (info from the presentation). Like we said, ambiguous.
Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1.5 Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1.5 Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1.5 Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1 Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1
Logic Wireless Logic Bolt v1.5 • Logic Bolt v1
The Logic Wireless Logic Bolt offers Word, Excel, PowerPoint and a PDF viewers, a 3MP main camera and a 1MP video call camera, up to 3 hours of talk time and up to 250 hours of standby. There's a composite video and VGA inputs, though we assume they would need some sort of adapter to pull that off (seriously, if that kind of information isn't in the Features page, we are not quite sure what should go there).
You can get the Logic Bolt v1.5 from RedMarket for 475 US dollars (330 euro) or the Logic Bolt v1.0 for 399 US dollars (277 euro), which has pretty much the same specs, save for the slightly smaller screen, larger 1800mAh battery, though strangely the same standby, talk and projection times.

Video demo of new Sense UI from HTC Espresso ROM hits the Net

YouTube Without Buffering
The HTC Espresso is like a ninja - all it leaves behind is circumstantial evidence that it exists. The latest part of the puzzle is a video demo of a leaked Espresso ROM that showcases the updated Sense UI running on the HTC Hero. Ironically, the Espresso is rumored to be the successor of the Hero.
The yet unseen HTC Espresso is supposed to be like an HTC Hero but with a QWERTY keyboard. An XML, leaked a few weeks ago, suggests the HTC Espresso will be running on a Qualcomm MSM 7200A 528MHz CPU and will have a screen with HVGA resolution (320x480).
This sounds an awful lot like the HTC Dream, save for the Sense UI, of course.
So, while the technical specifications are foggy at best, the Espresso ROM shows off a nicely polished new version of that Sense UI. The ROM is installed on an HTC Hero and seems quite responsive.
Here it is demoed on video:

Video

One of the biggest changes seems to be the app launcher bar at the bottom, which now offers a Call button along with a Contacts button.
Inside the application launcher itself, you can see the new translucent rounded squares that seem to be behind each and every shortcut - those are new as well.
And finally, the Notification pane in the HTC Espresso ROM has grown a "Recent" section. It seems to offer shortcuts to recent applications.
This new version of Sense UI is probably not HTC Espresso specific, but nobody know if it will get to the current crop of handset in a more official way.
We're quite curious to see any leaked shots of the Espresso as somehow it managed to escape the great HTC 2010 lineup leak

Sony Ericsson U5i passes FCC tests, runs Symbian, is not Kurara

Agile UltraSMS Gateway
There's something strange going on - the Sony Ericsson U5i passed FCC testing a few days ago, but that model number was tossed around as the Sony Ericsson Kurara model number, though this U5i seems to be a different device.

The Sony Ericsson Kurara leaked a while back - a Symbian powered phone with a 3.2" nHD touchscreen and 720p video recording. The Kurara CPU is supposedly a Cortex A8 running at 600MHz and the phone touts 3G with HSPA and Wi-Fi.

The Sony Ericsson U5i that passed the FCC testing however was tested for just two GSM and EDGE bands (850/1900). They also tested 802.11b/b Wi-Fi, but there's no 3G in sight in the test report.
A post on Cellpassion indicates that the Sony Ericsson U5i is indeed 2G only. The other specs they mention is the Symbian OS and nHD screen resolution (no screen size though), oh, and a 2MP camera. Maybe those initial rumors were wrong about the Kurara having the U5i model number.

So, the Sony Ericsson U5i seems to be targeted at the same crowd as the Nokia 5230 and the Nokia 5530 XpressMusic.

YouTube Without Buffering
Update: It seems that thing about the U5 having only a 2 megapixel camera is not correct. Obviously Cellpassion have taken that spec from a wrong place in the U5i XML file. As it turns out, U5i may still be Kurara (or vice versa) but that doesn't answer why the FCC didn't test any 3G frequencies on their test unit.
The announcement of the U5i (be it Kurara or not) should be expected in Q1 2010 as the Sony Ericsson confidentiality request to FCC expires in the end of March. Of course, we expect a few more leaks before then, but if you know something, do let us know.

Nexus One fully spec'ed, will be 'invite only' first, for T-Mobile later

EETI Touch Controllers
If Google aimed to build up hype for the Nexus One, then they've done a good job. Now that we have the complete specs, we think that the excitement around the phone will be just beginning to grow. But getting your hands on a Nexs One might be a problem, at least at first.
Here's the lowdown on the specs - the Nexus One is running Android 2.1 on top of a Snapdragon CPU clocked at 1GHz, with 512MB RAM and 512MB ROM. The screen is a 3.7-incher AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with WVGA resolution (reportedly, there's no support for multitouch).

Nexus One specifications Nexus One specifications

Here are the specifications for the Nexus One
The Nexus One has quad-band GSM/EDGE support and 3G with T-Mobile frequencies (900/1700/2100). The 3G comes in 7.2Mbps HSDPA and 5.76Mbps HSUPA flavor. The rest of the connectivity options are duly covered as well - Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, GPS with A-GPS and a digital compass and finally a microUSB port.
The phone is well equipped for multimedia as well - a 5MP autofocus camera with LED flash, 4GB microSD card in-box with support for up to 32GB cards, H.264 video decoding, and a 3.5mm audio jack. And of course the big AMOLED screen of the Nexus One should make for a great viewing experience.

Nexus One specifications Nexus One specifications

That's one rich spec sheet
The physical aspects of the phone are quite enticing as well. The Nexus One measures in at 119 x 59.8 x 11.5mm and weighs 130 grams with the 1400mAh battery. The back cover is Teflon-coated (think HTC Hero) and there's a second mic at the back of the phone for active noise cancellation.

Google Nexus One Google Nexus One Google Nexus One

A reminder of what the Nexus One looks like
There are some more interesting nuggets of information - in addition to Cell-ID positioning, there's "Wi-Fi positioning" (something like Skyhook like on the iPhone's Maps app maybe?) and the trackball serves as a notification light with a tri-color LED glowing under it.
So, it all sounds like an Android fanboy's dream but getting your foot in the door as an early adopter might be a challenge. To get the Nexus One you'll need an invite, just like all beta Google services upsofar.
Typical Google however, rumor has it that T-Mobile USA will be getti9ng the phone as well some time in the future. No one knows when exactly but when the "beta" period of the Nexus One runs out, you should be able to get it through normal (read non-EBay) channels.

Firmware update for the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD is coming soon

Samsung
It seems that complaint report on the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD has finally paid off. Samsung just announced an upcoming firmware update that will address some of the issues the user community has reported. Unfortunately, the less-than-24fps video recording is not among them.
There are three changes that the firmware update will bring. The first is an improved browser, with faster user interface. The browser on the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD needed a kick in the pants for its real life experience.
The next update is the addition of kinetic scrolling, which the browser already has, but the rest of the interface doesn't. Samsung spruced up the S60 5th edition UI with its widget happy TouchWiz UI, but changes didn't go much further than the homescreen. At least now, the Samsung Omnia HD can catch up with the rest of the touchscreen gang.
Finally, there's a new graphic engine, which increases the "the speed to access the multimedia content". Notice the word "access" - this means better playback, but still no stable 24 frames per second for 720p video recording. When we reviewed the Samsung i8910 Omnia HD, the frame rate was our major complaint, after the audio recording issue has been fixed.
Nonetheless, these three things were mentioned in the report on the Omnia HD and Panashe Michael Ngwerume who wrote it can tick them off the checklist. Score one for the Samsung Omnia HD enthusiasts.
The new Omnia HD firmware should be available in January 2010, starting with the UK and then moving on with other European markets, Asia, Africa and the rest of the world. To install the update, you're going to need Samsung PC Studio 7 installed on your computer. You can just download it from Samsung's website.

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 passes FCC test again, for AT&T this time

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 is making a second round through the FCC testing grounds. The first time it was tested, the frequencies listed in the report indicated that it was the T-Mobile version. The new report however is about the XPERIA X10a version.
The listed 3G frequencies are 850/1900MHz, so hello AT&T and the rest that share those bands - Bell, Rogers, Telus. It's no guarantee that any of these operators will get the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10a, but their chances just raised drastically. It's still not too late for a "Dear Santa" letter.
So, there are two versions of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 that have passed through the FCC now, the first one seemingly designed for T-Mobile. Yet there's still no info on when either of them will actually start selling.
To help pass the time, here are some shots of the X10 iFixit style (PDF link). You can also keep an eye on the SonyStyle USA website. They have the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 on sale and maybe they'll get the XPERIA X10 too, if your operator of choice doesn't. Just don't expect to get it in time for this Christmas.

Samsung M5650 Lindy goes official, live photos inside

Samsung
Now this will hardly shock you, especially if you are among the lucky Portuguese who already purchased it but the Samsung M5650 Lindy is now officially announced. The press release doesn't go much further than confirming the Lindy to be a slightly bigger and vastly more powerful Corby cousin.
Samsung M5650 Lindy tops its affordable relative with 3G with 7.2Mbps HSDPA and video calling plus Wi-Fi. It also packs a 3-megapixel autofocus camera instead of the 2 MP excuse of a shooter on the Corby's back.

Android-running Motorola XT800, XT701 and MT710 headed to China

Three almost identical Android-powered handsets by Motorola are heading to China, each to one of the three largest Chinese mobile service providers. Okay, one is actually running OPhone, which is based on Android, but is modified to suit the local Chinese markets better.
Meet the Motorola XT800, XT701 and MT710. All three stick with the touchscreen bar form factor and sport 3.7" touchscreen displays with 854 x 480 pixels resolution, matching the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and Motorola MILESTONE, the highest yet on an Android handset.
Morola XT800 photo Morola XT701 photo Morola MT710 photo
Motorola XT800 for China Telecom • Motorola XT701 for China Unicom • Motorola MT710 for China Mobile
The rest that is known about the hardware specs is that they all have 5MP cameras, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS support, a microSD card slot and FM Radio.
Motorola XT800
The first of the bunch is the Motorola XT800 for China Telecom. It's interesting because it has an HDMI connector and can play 720p videos. We don't know if it will also be capable of 720p video recording like the HTC Bravo promises. As for the 3G flavor, China Telecom uses CDMA and recently got a CDMA2000 license.

Cellular Backhaul
Actually, it seems that the Motorola XT701 might come to the US and Europe as the Motorola Sholes Tablet. Comparing the XT701 and the Sholes Tablet from the leaked roadmap, they seem to match (especially 720p video over HDMI, which isn't something you see every day). The camera on the Sholes Tablet was slated to be 8MP, though XT701 has 5MP. So, either the camera was cut down or the Sholes Tablet version will have an 8MP camera.
Motorola XT701
Next is the Motorola XT701, powered by Android 2.0 as well and is headed to China Unicom. It has 3G support with HSDPA/HSUPA and accelerometer and ambient light sensors. There's probably more to it, but that's all the info currently available.

Cost and target availability are yet unknown but we guess they can't take too long to appear. A version of the Motorola XT701 might be available elsewhere, thanks to it's standard 3G and a version of the Motorola XT800 springing is not completely unlikely too.
